No fewer than 13 passengers killed and ninety-eight hurt in rail accident in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and handling of the country's major government projects.

The disaster took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a line built to connect the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was created to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to thoroughly investigate what caused this accident,” stated the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those involved.

Key Undertaking of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his administration's developmental vision for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economic fortunes of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a dramatic increase of its role in national works. They were built at an rapid pace, defying expectations to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also fueled significant apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This includes an earlier collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Calls for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a key rival party called for an urgent halt in the development and management of all similar projects.

This pause was requested while awaiting a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."

In reply, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in complete compliance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and management of these vital projects.
