TikTok is introducing a updated setting that allows them to reduce the volume of AI-created content appearing in their streams. This initiative comes as the company disclosed that it now features more than 1 billion content made with AI.
Trial and Implementation
The new functionality is being tested over the next few weeks before a full-scale rollout. This shift comes amid a rise in AI content, spurred by new content generation software.
AI Proliferation Online
Studies have shown that approximately one in 10 of the quickest rising content creators on another major platform exclusively feature content made by AI. A considerable share of this content is deemed mass-produced AI material, a term for poor-quality, bulk-generated content that is frequently absurd or surreal.
Based on user feedback that many people appreciate content produced via AI tools, from AI artwork to informative clips, and we intend to give people the option to see more or less of that, according to their own likes,” commented a company executive.
AI on the Platform
The platform announced that there are presently 1.3 billion videos on its network tagged as AI-generated. In total, more than 100 million pieces of content are uploaded to the app daily, making AI content a limited part of its complete catalog.
User Control Features
Members will be in a position to limit or boost the level of artificial media they view by using the topic control feature in the platform and selecting the AI content topic. Further subjects that can already be modified under the tool include news, clothing, beauty, and choreography.
Platform Guidelines
Its rules require users to identify lifelike AI-made content, and it forbids malicious fake videos of celebrities or crisis events. Any authentic-looking AI video that is unmarked can be deleted under its community policies.
Furthermore, the app will from now on apply an artificially created tag to content produced via its own AI tools, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for identifying AI-generated material. This step is aimed to stop users from trying to bypass the labeling process.
Educational Initiatives
The company is furthermore establishing a $2m awareness program for professionals and institutions to produce informative material about responsible artificial intelligence. This initiative will benefit educational bodies specializing in training programming and robotics.
Platform Protection
The video-sharing app has defended its safety measures, following discussion over proposals to lay off a large number of content moderators in the United Kingdom. TikTok is expected to reduce hundreds of positions in its content moderation department in London, with trade unions and online safety experts voicing alarm that people are being substituted by AI moderation.
A senior executive stated that human moderation would continue to be important, but artificial intelligence can protect employees by removing the most graphic content prior to it gets reviewed by humans. The company stated a notable drop in disturbing and violent content reviewed by content reviewers over the last 12 months due to reliance on its automated systems.
“We think that it’s essential to combine humans and technology to ensure user safety,” the executive stated. “We’ll have staff as involved in the system, but we further consider it’s extremely critical to limit contact with unsafe media as swiftly, which is the area in which a significant AI assistance is really helping us work at speed.”
